This might seem like small potatoes to some of you, but those who read the brief and the exhibits (which aren't very long) might wonder what has got into California's Secretary of State.
Alex Padilla also censored out of the voters handbook (in June 2016) the words of an independent candidate for US Senate. The candidate paid by the word to have his statement in the voters handbook. Padilla's office deleted the sentence in his statement saying he is a registered independent (which was a true statement). The candidate, Paul Merritt, is suing over that. Padilla didn't even notify Merritt of the deletion; the candidate discovered it when he read the handbook.
Padilla also this year wouldn't let the Peace & Freedom Party place Jill Stein on its primary ballot, even though the Peace & Freedom Party and Stein both wanted Stein to appear on that ballot. It is the custom in California that minor party presidential ballots contain the names of presidential candidates that the party wants put on the presidential primary ballot.
