Rick Hasen has posted a link to a Politico story about vice-presidential substitution for independent presidential candidates.  No one the reporter talked to seems to have known that John Anderson won every lawsuit on this issue in 1980.  Anderson didn't choose his actual vice-presidential running mate until August 27, 1980.  He chose former Wisconsin Governor Patrick Lucey on that day.  The stand-in was Milton Eisenhower, President Eisenhower's older brother.  Milton Eisenhower was 90 years old in 1980.
Every state printed Lucey on the November 1980 ballot, except for South Dakota.  Anderson just didn't get around to suing South Dakota.
Also, as recently as 2014, independent gubernatorial candidates in Alaska and South Dakota won lawsuits forcing those states to let them replace Lieutenant Governor running mates. Richard Winger 415-922-9779 PO Box 470296, San Francisco Ca 94147
