Politics becomes existential when people whose understanding of what
it is physically and economically possible begin to confront the
approach of the limits on what is possible, and discover that no
rational policy that accepts those limits is politically possible.
The great divide is between those who think universal prosperity is
attainable and sustainable, and those who understand it is not. The
first group seems to think infinite resources are to be had by just
politically willing them into existence, and the second understands
that even abundance of cheap energy and vast technological
breakthroughs are not going to help people who just can't make it on
their own.
Of course, even members of the second group don't want to confront
limits on prosperity and the unsustainability of policies that promise
no limits.
