Subject: [EL] Some notes on the new FEC site
I was one of the beta testers on the new site, and the designers were very responsive to feedback. The data is now much easier to search, including individual donors and recipients across multiple committees within an election cycle. You can search for every federal committee that, for example, hired a particular consulting firm or attorney, or every time that a particular donor made an itemized donation in a cycle.
There is one big flaw I've noticed on the "search elections by location feature, which is that parts of the new site fail to account for redistricting. For example, if you want to find the FL-13 race from 2006 (what used to be the most expensive in history back in the good old days), you could put in a Sarasota ZIP code like 34243 into the "Lookup elections by location" tool. If you do that, however, it will only return results from FL-16, which is the present district that Sarasota is in. So instead of the 2006 Buchanan vs. Jennings contest in FL-13, you get results from the 2006 Foley/Negron vs. Mahoney contest from FL-16. Be aware of this flaw when searching historical races.
