Greetings, all:
First, thanks to the list moderators for letting me join. By way of brief
introduction, my name is George Scoville and I'm the outgoing EIC of *The
University of Memphis Law Review*. Last year, I was a research assistant
to Professor Steve Mulroy, who I see is also a member of this listserv, and
who moderated an election law panel at the MLK 50 symposium in Memphis on
Monday featuring Professor Hasen. It's nice to meet everyone, albeit by
way of email.
Second, I just published a paper on coordination doctrine in the
states. Here's
a permanent link
<http://www.memphis.edu/law/documents/scovillecurtailingthecudgelofcoordination.pdf>;
it should also be available on Westlaw and Lexis soon. Full disclosure:
I'm a former Catoite and still a vocal libertarian, so I anticipate that
many will disagree on the merits of the normative arguments I make in the
paper. Still, it contains the first fifty-state survey of coordination
statutes in the literature in Part III, and accordingly I hope you will
find it useful.
Finally, my wife (a Democratic strategist) thinks I'm going to be a law
professor when this is all said and done. I'll be clerking in District
Court next year, and I understand that such a placement is a useful step
into the academy, but people like me usually have to pursue an LL.M.
somewhere before we have a shot at a tenure-track job, from what I
understand anyway. And I'm a non-traditional student to boot, so I'm not
sure I have another degree in me (or that Emily will tolerate one). For
now, I anticipate entering private practice after clerking, but I would be
curious to hear any of your stories or advice, especially if you took
unconventional paths into teaching. I taught an undergraduate American
government course before entering law school, and I enjoyed the experience,
so teaching has always been in the back of my mind as I pursued a JD.
Again, thank you to the moderators for approving my membership. Please
don't hesitate to contact me directly if I may ever be of assistance to any
of you.
Sincerely yours,
George Scoville
