Hi List People,
Here's my final draft argument against the proposed City of Los Angeles
charter amendments that would move the regular city [and school
district] “primary” election dates to March, starting in 2020.
Will you sign? I can include up to 18 signatures other than my own, but
need them by Monday afternoon.

/Argument:/
While regular state and national elections never end before November,
city [school district] elections often end when someone gets a majority
in the so-called “primary.”
*Voters should always have choices in November!*
The earlier the “primary,” the shorter the time voters get to learn
about facts and events relevant to choosing who should serve in office
next -- and the longer reelected officials or “lame duck” losers get to
be in office without being accountable to voters!
*Forcing voters to make final decisions in March 2020 would be like
forcing baseball managers to sign players who’ll start in 2021 before
the 2020 season has even begun.*We, the managers, deserve a chance to
see how well the players do in 2020 before we decide about 2021!
HERE’S THE BEST THING ABOUT VOTING *NO*:
*_Our NO votes on E [EE] will give the City Council a chance and a
reason to come back to us with a better idea!_
* ...
*And here are better ideas* for our city [school board] elections:
A) The “top-two” system used in our state and federal elections. Why is
this better? We should always have at least two choices in November!
B) Instant runoff elections in November using Ranked Choice Voting. Why
is this better? We don’t need a separate primary election!Plus, RCV lets
you vote for who you really want, without fear of wasting your vote.
C) Citywide [Districtwide] RCV.With this, your vote can support any
candidate in the city [school district], so where you live does not
limit who represents you.
BTW, the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles advocates idea B.
*Charter Amendment E [EE]* would have people voting in local “primaries”
they don’t really care about -- *fake turnout*.
/
/*Let’s vote NO ON E [EE]* and see if we can get some REAL improvement!
