"When a T-Shirt Gets You in Trouble at the Voting Booth"<http://electionlawblog.org/?p=97210>

Love the kicke<https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/29/us/politics/supreme-court-voting-first-amendment.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fpolitics&action=click&contentCollection=politics&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=sectionfront>r on this new Adam Liptak Sidebar column on the Minn. political apparel case:

Similar problems have arisen in the Supreme Court's backyard. A few years ago<http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/03/us/03line.html>, I saw a court police officer order a man wearing a "Guns Save Lives" button on the Supreme Court plaza to remove it.

"No political logos on the plaza," an officer said.

I asked the officer for his reasoning. "You can't interview people on the plaza," he responded.

He was part of a long tradition. A Supreme Court police officer once threatened a woman with arrest<https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/461/171/case.html> for displaying a sign bearing the verbatim text of the First Amendment.

Whether at a polling place or on the Supreme Court plaza, decorum is a worthy goal. But so is the robust debate protected by the First Amendment.

Pa: "Governor Wolf to Enlist Non-Partisan Mathematician to Evaluate Fairness of Redistricting Maps"<http://electionlawblog.org/?p=97203>
Posted on January 28, 2018 12:38 pm<http://electionlawblog.org/?p=97203> by Rick Hasen<http://electionlawblog.org/?author=3>

Release:<https://www.governor.pa.gov/governor-wolf-enlist-non-partisan-mathematician-evaluate-fairness-redistricting-maps/>

Governor Wolf today announced he will enlist a non-partisan mathematician, Moon Duchin, Ph.D. an Associate Professor of Mathematics from Tufts University, to provide him guidance on evaluating redistricting maps for fairness. Governor Wolf has made clear since the Supreme Court ruled the map unconstitutional that he saw this as an opportunity to eliminate partisan gerrymandering and deliver the people of Pennsylvania a fair Congressional map.
