SCOTUSBlog:<http://www.scotusblog.com/2018/10/ginsburg-puts-census-depositions-on-hold/>
Tonight Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg granted<http://www.scotusblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/18A375-In-Re-Department-of-Commerce-Temp.-Stay.pdf> the federal government’s request to put off the depositions of two high-level Trump administration officials, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross and John Gore, the acting head of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. Gore’s deposition had been scheduled for tomorrow morning, and Ross’ for Thursday, in a challenge to Ross’ decision to bring back a question about citizenship on the 2020 census. (More details on the challenge and the issues involved can be found in an earlier post<http://amylhowe.com/2018/10/03/federal-government-asks-justices-to-intervene-in-census-dispute/>.)…Ginsburg directed the challengers to respond to the government’s request by 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 11. Her order will remain in effect until either she or the full Supreme Court acts on the request.

Equally American:<http://www.equalrightsnow.org/supreme_court_denies_review_feds_defend_disenfranchisement_in_u_s_territories_before_human_rights_commission>
This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court denied review<https://www.supremecourt.gov/orders/courtorders/100918zor_p8k0.pdf> in Segovia v. United States<http://www.equalrightsnow.org/segovia>, a lawsuit seeking to expand voting rights in U.S. territories. The lawsuit was brought by Equally American on behalf of a group of veterans and others living in Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands who would be able to vote for President and have voting representation in Congress if they lived in any other U.S. territory or even a foreign country but cannot based on discriminatory federal and state overseas voting laws.
On Friday, federal officials defended the continued disenfranchisement of millions of U.S. citizens living in the territories in a hearing before the InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights (IACHR<http://www.oas.org/en/iachr/>) in Rossello v. United States<http://www.equalrightsnow.org/rossello>.

Justices Ginsburg and Kagan (but surprisingly not Justice Sotomayor) dissented, citing the Purcell Principle. Justice Kavanaugh did not participate.

“With hours left to register to vote in Florida, complaints are mounting over glitches”<https://electionlawblog.org/?p=101418>

Miami Herald:<https://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics-government/state-politics/article219732785.html>
That huge swirling menace in the Gulf known as Hurricane Michael has the attention of Floridians four weeks before Election Day.
But a disturbance of another kind is intensifying, and it involves voting.
Two controversies erupted at once Tuesday, one over a state online voter registration system and the other involving the storm’s disruption of the last day that Florida residents could become eligible voters in 2018.
Complaints multiplied from people who say the state’s online registration portal<https://registertovoteflorida.gov/en/Registration/Index> was not working. The portal, which was a year old on Oct. 1, has had glitches before, but never this close to a voter registration deadline, and it prompted threats of legal action.
