Greetings!
Yesterday's dustup raised some tangental thoughts I would like to share.
As far as the usefulness of this listserv, I have found it disappointing in recent times. Perhaps this is the rose-lit memories of my misspent youth, but the List was in the past a great vehicle to spread and debate campaign finance, other forms of political speech restriction, related tax, statutory and admin law issues that come up in the "political" area, funny bon mots, and whatnot.
These days, not so much, it seems to me. There is a great deal on this list about what Rick is doing - which is fine, it is his list. The Skeptic in her day had no problem using that blog for all sorts of personal updates, scholarly promotion, and snark. There is also a great deal on this list about vote suppression and gerrymandering. Don't get me wrong, I think these are important pieces of the pie, but the pie is quite a bit bigger than this.
Moreover, there have been several times when I have reached out to the list with material from my FPPC experience that I found interesting or puzzling, hoping for some comment. I instead heard... crickets.
Perhaps people would rather not respond out of fear that anything written to me becomes a public record. That's true, but this is a pretty public venue as it is, so that doesn't seem likely. It could also be that the people now on the List aren't really interested in anything beyond the list's current portfolio. That is fine, too. I'll quit trying to elicit reactions on other topics, and might unsubscribe.
If there is some other explanation for what I have observed (including, perhaps, that I am wrong) what is it?
Allison
