Rick,
This is Joe Kelly, the Wisconsin reporter with Courthouse News Service. [] gave me your name and told me to get in touch with you to see if you could forward my request to the election law listserv in relation to story I’m working on.
The underlying lawsuit of the story is from the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty, a conservative-leaning advocacy group in the state. I’ve attached the complaint, but they are suing the Wisconsin Election Commission essentially saying that the state is not enforcing a law that requires it to purge voters who don’t confirm their address within 30 days. The WEC says that are complying with the letter of the law by offering voters 12 to 24 months to respond, and that nothing in the Electronic Registration Information Center’s (ERIC) provisions or in Wisconsin statutes does it require it to do what WILL is asking it to do.
My question is essentially whether or not this suit carries any water legally. It seems to touch on some fears at least adjacent to previously debunked voter fraud conspiracies, and I’m just trying to ensure the legal legitimacy of their argument. If you could provide any perspective or context on all of this in terms of election law, that would be tremendously helpful. You can feel free to contact me here, or if it is more convenient you can call me at (414) 331-3430.
Thanks for your consideration.
Best,
Joe
