My vocabulary point here is extremely miniscule, but the best term for the boxes in which people leave postal mail is "collection box."

I placed it, fully addressed and stamped, in my mailbox for pick up. 3 weeks later, she received it.  So, I guess it was good that it got picked up, but handling left a lot to be desired.
