[EL] for first time, number of registered independents is greater than number of Republicans, nationwide

I have been tracking voter registration data by party since the late 1960's.  For the January/February 2020 registration data chart in the March 1 2020 print edition of Ballot Access News, I have a chart showing that for the first time in U.S. history, the number of registered independents nationwide is greater than the number of registered Republicans.

Sometimes people are confused about this because the media frequently mentions public opinion polls that show independents are 40%.  But the voter registration records are quite different, and independents have never been above 29% when one looks at how people are actually registered.
