"News coverage gets geo-fragmented"<https://electionlawblog.org/?p=108717>

Madelyn Sanfilippo and Yafit Lev-Aretz reflect in NiemanLab<https://www.niemanlab.org/2020/01/news-coverage-gets-geo-fragmented/> on the impact of the structure of the news media market, and innovations in the delivery of news, on coverage of the 2020 elections. The lede:

Coverage of the 2020 U.S. presidential election will mark the beginning of gerrymandered news coverage, as hyper-personalization and geotargeting are applied at scale in news apps and in mobile push notifications.

. . .

The 2018 midterm elections provided a first glimpse of location-based targeting in journalism, with major news apps and aggregators using location data to personalize push notifications. This was most prominent in the Florida gubernatorial race: National news outlets provided not only different push notifications at different times to local and national audiences - they also fragmented the state, with different alerts sent to users in Orlando and Tallahassee, Miami and Fort Myers.

The presidential primary field narrows ... but it's also broader than you may realize<https://electionlawblog.org/?p=108713>

There's been quite a bit of coverage on Julián Castro's recent exit<https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/02/us/politics/julian-castro-dropping-out.html> from the presidential race.

On a comparatively slow (election) news day, your reminder that the FEC notes we've got plenty of options left: as of today, they list 1042 total declared candidates for President<https://www.fec.gov/data/candidates/president/?election_year=2020&cycle=2020&election_full=true>. I personally think "Chocolate Pancakes<https://www.fec.gov/data/candidates/president/?q=chocolate+pancakes&election_year=2020&cycle=2020&election_full=true>" makes for an intriguing dark horse.

The City<https://thecity.nyc/2020/01/five-trips-to-the-polls-to-pick-queens-borough-president.html> reports on what one attorney calls an "unusual electoral gauntlet":

Queens voters are being asked to head to the polls five times in less than two years to select a borough president to replace - and succeed - Melinda Katz.

The race's six current candidates are gearing up for a March special election to temporarily fill the seat. Then the results of the June primary and November general election will combine to determine who serves the final year remaining in Katz' term, which ends Dec. 31, 2021.

That will be followed by next year's primary and general election for a full four years in office, beginning Jan. 1, 2022. Katz recently stepped down after winning election as the borough's district attorney.

And the big presidential program tomorrow at 1:30, on representation, voting, and sustainable constitutional democracy<https://memberaccess.aals.org/eweb/DynamicPage.aspx?webcode=SesDetails&ses_key=9ba0f208-e95f-4a06-ba73-bf962caeda06>, with Guy, Pam, Michael Morley, and Kim Lane Scheppele, moderated by Thomas Ginsburg.
