Douglas Op-Ed on Kentucky ID Bill <https://electionlawblog.org/?p=108870>

Josh Douglas in the Courier-Journal
<https://www.courier-journal.com/story/opinion/2020/01/09/kentuckys-proposed-photo-id-law-would-make-harder-vote/4418267002/>
:
[T]he [proposed] law requires all voters to show a photo ID issued by the
federal or state government that lists an expiration date.
University-issued student IDs count. But IDs from the University of
Kentucky and University of Louisville do not have an expiration date. So it
is incorrect to claim that the law allows student IDs for voting: The IDs
issued by the state’s two largest universities simply won’t work….
My hope is that the legislature will revise the bill to (1) remove the
requirement that student IDs have an expiration date, (2) allow voters with
a reasonable impediment to fill out the affidavit at the polls and cast a
regular ballot, (3) remove the notarized affidavit requirement for absentee
ballots, and (4) delay the implementation until 2021.

Facebook is standing by its policies that allow politicians to lie to
voters, while targeting their ads at narrow subsets of the public —
decisions with vast implications for the more than $1 billion in online
campaign messaging expected in this year’s elections.
The online giant announced Thursday morning that it is not changing the
most controversial elements of its approach to campaign ads, after months
of a debate that has divided Silicon Valley and brought Facebook a barrage
of criticism from Democrats. The critics have been most incensed by
Facebook’s refusal to fact-check politicians’ claims, accusing the company
of knowingly profiting from deception.

“How A Raucous Convention Revolutionized Our Primary System”

A 538 video
<https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-a-raucous-convention-revolutionized-our-primary-system/>,
with more to come:
By casting a ballot in a primary or caucus, voters in the U.S. have the
chance to decide who will vie to lead the free world. But that wasn’t
always the case. The rules governing our primary system aren’t in the
Constitution, and average Americans have only been able to have their vote
guaranteed to count since the 1970s. This monumental change might not have
happened if it weren’t for a disastrous convention in 1968.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be looking into how our our modern system of
primaries and caucuses came to be as part of our podcast and video series,
The Primary Project. This episode is about that 1968 convention, and in the
following episodes, we’ll ask if the system we have today works as well as
we’d like.

“Shadow Group Provides Sanders Super PAC Support He Scorns”

AP <https://apnews.com/345bbd1af529cfb1e41305fa3ab1e604>:
Bernie Sanders says he doesn’t want a super PAC. Instead, he has Our
Revolution, a nonprofit political organization he founded that functions
much the same as one….
Now, with less than one month to go before the Iowa caucuses, Our
Revolution appears to be skirting campaign finance law, which forbids
groups founded by federal candidates and officeholders from using large
donations to finance federal election activity, including Sanders’ 2020 bid.
