I hope someone on this list has an idea for helping me learn how much money the Virginia Dem and Rep Parties received in mid-2020 from the state income tax check-off form. Virginia is one of about ten states that lets state income taxpayers choose to send a small donation to the political party of their choice.
Ballot Access News, my publication, has reported the data for all these states starting in 2000. For 20 years no state has withheld the information. But this year, the Virginia state tax office says they can't tell me because they are too short-handed due to the health crisis.
I hate to miss this data. I have tried contacting the state Republican and Democratic Parties of Virginia, via e-mail to their state offices, but after 2 days no one has responded from either major party.
If someone knows someone in the upper reaches of either party, or if anyone has any insight into how to get the two numbers from the state tax office, I would greatly appreciate it. All I want are two numbers...how much money did each of those two parties receive this year, subject to any convenient cut-off point. Obviously tax returns flow in all year so the numbers are constantly changing, but generally states report this data to me effective July 1, for example, of every calendar year.
