When Would the Georgia Winners Be Certified?
The winners of today's contests in Georgia may take a while to be certified
and get to Washington, meaning the Senate could be stuck at 51 Republicans
-- including Sen. Kelly Loeffler but not David Perdue, whose term expired
-- to 48 Democrats for several weeks after the results become clear.
According to an Associated Press primer
<https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-joe-biden-georgia-elections-house-elections-26d2fb54639ce1754eefd56b6cc9b091>,
Georgia counties have until Jan. 15 to certify results. The secretary of
state, Republican Brad Raffensperger, has until Jan. 22 — two days after
Biden is inaugurated — to certify statewide results.
Mr. Raffensperger’s office notes the law doesn’t require him to wait that
long if everything is in order, but if November is any indication, there
could be court fights or moves by officials across Georgia’s 159 counties
that require the maximum timetable.
Georgia law says that the governor must issue a certificate of election
“immediately” upon his receipt of certified vote totals from Mr.
Raffensperger.
The upshot: Even if Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock pull off victories,
Democrats may not take control of the Senate before Jan. 23. If Ms.
Loeffler or Mr. Perdue win, Republicans will retain control of the Senate.
