[EL] Local election news

I had heard that this was in response to two outside candidacies – of Maggie Thomas, a climate activist who withdrew her name in Jan. 2021 because she took a White House position (https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2021/01/25/maggie-thomas-env-15-forgoes-corporation-bid-for-white-house-role/), and Victor Ashe, a Republican former Knoxville mayor and ambassador to Poland (see https://www.nationalreview.com/2021/05/yale-universitys-war-against-alumni-and-accountability/). But I’m not up on the details, and might be mistaken.

This is outside of government, but the Yale Corporation responded to the success of a recent movement to elect a climate activist to the Yale Corporation by taking away the right of alumni to nominate candidates. Elections will now involve only candidates from a slate pre-approved by the Corporation.

Ilya’s post reminds me — I noticed an article recently about a Fairfax County VA PTA (I think) election in which a dissident group won seats on the board and the state association has decided to abolish that PTA. I’m sure I have some details wrong, and welcome correction. It ties in with an earlier comment about abolishing elections, etc

Ilya,
As entertaining as your campaign may or may not be, no one may use the listserv for electioneering.
Thanks for your understanding.

I described it in the piece: accountability, responsiveness, and independent thinking—pretty controversial stuff that gives you a sense of the current board’s standing in the community.
