[EL] Data question about racial turnout by county

Hello election law people.

I have received a data question from an undergraduate student.  Here's the question, slightly edited:

I'm conducting research on voter turnout in the South over the past several decades.  As part of this, I am looking for historical voter turnout data separated by race and county in the Southern states. Do you know where I might found this data?

I know a lot about race data in southern voter files, but I don't know one important thing:  has anyone compiled a comprehensive dataset like this?  In other words, I know the states that have race on the voter file, I know how to get the voter files from these state, and I know how to use that data to create a contemporary dataset like this.  What I don't know is if anyone has compiled the dataset the student is looking for, which would truly a labor of love.
