Hi to all. I'm a fairly new member to the list, and I hope this won't =
seem too self-promoting, but I wanted to let you all know about another =
(!) book on the 2000 election. NYU Press is publishing, on 10/1, my book =
called "Understanding the 2000 Election: A Guide to the Legal Battles =
that Decided the Presidency." It's a comprehensive and detailed treatment =
of all the main legal issues from the Florida phase of the election; it's =
(relatively) non-partisan; it's written for a general (educated) audience, =
i.e., not specifically for lawyers. It's available now at amazon.com or =
bn.com.

Some promote their books on this listserv. I would like to be the first to
promote the availability of databases.

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU, in partnership with Ken Goldstein at
the University of Wisconsin, developed national databases of political
advertising on television. These databases formed the foundations of the
Brennan Center reports on political advertising and issue advocacy, entitled
"Buying Time 1998" and the soon-to-be released "Buying Time 2000." The
databases include: the name, market, date, and frequency of all televised
political ads in 1998 and 2000 in the nation's 75 major media markets; the
election and race targeted by each ad; the content of the ads; and estimated
costs. The development of the databases and reports were funded by The Pew
Charitable Trusts.

As part of our research agreement, the databases are available in SPSS format
on CD-ROM for $25 each--or $40 for both 1998 and 2000--and require signing an
agreement that the databases will be used for academic research and not for
commercial purposes. If interested in acquiring the databases, contact the
Brennan Center at: (212)998-6730 or (e-mail) brennan.center@nyu.edu.
