A 33- year old candidate in the Democratic Party primary for Congress in
New York contacted me, terrified, because on the eve of petition
signature
gathering to get on the ballot in New York to challenge a long-term
incumbent, he has been subpoenaed by the Manhattan DA's office to appear
before a grand jury. It seems to me that the DA's office is pursuing a
theory that a campaign giveaway offer of certain free books (an offer
the
campaign has not, in fact, yet carried through on for anyone) is
tantamount
to criminal vote buying. Does anyone have a recommendation of a lawyer
appropriate to represent this candidate with the DA's office --
preferably
someone who has worked on the criminal side of election cases, but
experience with the Manhattan DA's office even outside election cases
would
be a start. This young candidate does not have the resources for an
expensive white collar criminal defense lawyer. I am hoping some of the
practicing lawyers on the list might have some suggestions. I'm sorry
to
impose this on the list.
Thanks,
Rick Pildes
