See this
story in the Chicago Tribune about the surprise decision of Sen.
Fitzgerald of Illinois not to run for reelection. The last two paragraphs
read:
All told, Fitzgerald ended
up primarily self-financing his first campaign for the Senate and spent more
than $13 million of his own money.
Concerns about spending more of his personal wealth were among the reasons
he opted not to seek re-election, sources close to the senator said. Although
new federal campaign spending laws allow candidates to raise money in greater
amounts than he was able to do in his first campaign, Fitzgerald still expected
that he would be the primary source for dollars.
