The San Jose Mercury News offers this report, which begins: "Democratic lawmakers and political reformers called Friday for an expansion of California's narrowly crafted lobbying laws after a report in the Mercury News that one of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's top campaign advisers has used his administration access to help corporate clients without disclosing his influence."

The LA Times offers this report, with the subhead: "Ruling means strict limits on donations in three cities may finally take effect."


"B.C. appeal court upholds election gag law"

See this news item, which begins: "VANCOUVER — The B.C. Court of Appeal has upheld a section of Canada's Election Act that prohibits posting of election results before all the polls have closed. In a 2-1 decision released Friday, Justice Anne Rowles of the B.C. Appeal Court wrote that limiting freedom of expression caused by the Elections Act is 'demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.'"
