After every congressional election (since 1920), the
Clerk of the US House of Representatives has published
a handy book, giving the vote for all candidates for
each house of congress. The Clerk's Statistics of the
Presidential & Congressional Election of Nov. 2, 2004,
is now in print. The table at the back shows the
nationwide vote for each party in the whole nation.
For the US Senate races, it shows 39,920,562 voters
voted "Republican" for US Senate, and 44,754,618
voters voted "Democratic" for US Senate. The 2000
booklet also shows more Democratic votes for US Senate
than Republican, whereas 2002 shows more Republican
than Democratic. When one adds up all 3 sets (to
cover the entire Senate) Democrats have more.
