Probably many of you are already aware of this book,
but some may not be. It is "The Forgotten Memoir of
John Knox". It was published in 2002. John Knox was
the law clerk to US Supreme Court Justice James C.
McReynolds in the 1936-1937 term. It's 267 pages.
It's an account of what it was like to be the law
clerk for Justice McReynolds, during the years when
FDR tried to "pack the court" and when the court
stopped invalidating New Deal economic regulations.
Since McReynolds and most other justices refused to
use their new US Supreme Court offices, McReynolds'
clerk was expected to be at McReynolds home (which was
also his office) between 9 am and 5 pm every working
day. Also the clerk lived in the same apartment
building as the Justice, and the Justice sometimes
drove his car to the court for oral arguments and
brought the clerk along with him, so it's a very
personal account.
