Rick Hasen's election law blog today linked to a
column by former FEC Commissioner Brad Smith. Brad's
column said that Lenora Fulani (who received primary
season matching funds in 1988 and 1992) said in 2005
that Jews have functioned as mass murderers of people
of color. Actually Fulani said that in 1989. She has
never repeated it and I suspect she is sorry she said
it.
Brad also said that Lyndon LaRouche has received
millions in federal tax dollars for eight runs for
president, but he didn't receive any in his first run,
1976.
I believe it is refreshing that primary season
matching money goes to candidates with "disreputable"
views. The policy is a symbol that at least one U.S.
election law really lives up to the ideals of the
Helsinki Accords, in which the U.S. promised to
"respect the right of citizens to seek political
office without discrimination", and to "respect the
right of individuals to establish their own political
parties and enable them to compete with each other on
a basis of equal treatment".
