No Ruling Today in Vermont Campaign Finance Case or
Texas Redistricting Case
Despite my prediction
that it appeared to be time for the Supreme Court to issue a ruling in
at least one of these cases today (argued Feb. 28 and March 1), the
Court has
issued opinions
in only one argued case, tangentially related to election law.
According to Lyle Dennistion, in Garcetti v. Ceballos, the Court ruled
5-4 that "the First Amendment does not provide protection for comments
that a public employee makes in the course of performing regular
duties, even if the comments alleged corruption or government
wrongdoing."
The next opportunity for a ruling in these election law cases appears
to be Monday, June 5 (though I'm not sure when the Court might begin
adding Thursday release dates for opinions).
