EAC Commissioner Martinez Puts Off Resignation
Electionline has posted this press release from the EAC which reads in full as follows:
REID ANNOUNCES EXTENSION OF COMMISSIONER MARTINEZ'S TENURE ON ELECTION ASSISTANCE COMMISSION
For those of us who lamented Commissioner Martinez's resignation (see here, here, and here), this is very good news. What is unclear is whether, especially in an election year, a replacement can be found before the Commissioner's term expires.
Washington, DC--Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid announced today that Commissioner Ray Martinez has agreed to extend his tenure on the EAC. Commissioner Martinez, who has over a year remaining on his four-year term, had announced in April his intention to resign from the EAC at the end of June to return to Texas for personal and family considerations. Senator Reid asked Commissioner Martinez to continue his important work on the EAC while a replacement is sought."Commissioner Martinez has been a tremendous asset to the Election Assistance Commission in its work to implement the Help America Vote Act. His absence at this time would be a loss to the nation, and I sincerely thank the Commissioner for his willingness to continue this work, which helps ensure the fairness and effective administration of the nation's elections," Senator Reid commented.
Commissioner Martinez, who currently serves as vice chair for the EAC, is a native of Texas and has spent most of his career in public service, working in the Clinton Administration as deputy assistant for Intergovernmental affairs at the White House and as regional director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
