WASHINGTON - On Thursday, July 27, President Bush is scheduled to sign the Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, and Cesar E. Chavez Voting Rights Act. Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office, and LaShawn Warren, ACLU Legislative Counsel, are available to discuss the significance of the renewal of this landmark legislation and the ongoing need to enforce the law to end discrimination in voting.
What: ACLU Leaders Available To Discuss signing into law and proper enforcement of the Voting Rights Act Reauthorization
Who: Caroline Fredrickson, Director, ACLU Washington Legislative Office
LaShawn Warren, ACLU Legislative Counsel
When: Wednesday, July 26 and Thursday, July 27, 2006
The ACLU roundly applauded Congress last week when it voted overwhelmingly to reauthorize the crucial legislation with its most important provisions intact. But the Voting Rights Act is only effective when vigorously enforced. The Department of Justice and the judiciary must continue to block measures that would dilute minority strength, including voter ID laws, redistricting aimed at weakening the impact of minority voters, and other harmful measures.
