Several states now use Tampa FL based SOE software, which posts results directly
from county central tabulators on web sites sometimes running through the
county or state, but often identified by clarityelections or some similar name.
Setting aside for the moment that results are traversing through the server by
a privatized middleman, these results are very useful. They come up as often as
every half hour per county and contain precinct level detail results in
sortable, crunchable spreadsheet form.
You can also download free software which allows you to put in the URL for the
results sites ahead of time, then by clicking the button you can pull the
incoming results as often as you want, automated. I have some of the
instructions for that and the name of the software in our Tool Kit 2008. You'll
want to install it and practice with it before Tuesday. I learned it in about
10 minutes, it's not hard.
SOE software's clarity election results cover every county in NC, SC, KY, and
also Dallas County, several Florida counties, a smattering of California
Counties, Bloomington IL, and a bunch of other places. I found their results to
be quite informative in Broward County in 2008, where a (winning) candidate
disappeared from the count midstream on Election night, and in Hillsborough
County where votes were deleting themselves magically until election supervisor
Buddy Johnson ran out of the building never to return. (He's now being
investigated by the FBI). Also interesting in Dallas, where they had votes
wandering off the tally a week after the election, and Contra Costa County,
where the results showed they withheld page 2 of a thousand or so ballots,
scanning it only a week after the election. You can see these interesting
things when you download all the interim versions and compare them with each
subsequent version.
For a different methodology of getting minute-by-minute analyses of inflowing
results, including absentee results for each minute and hour before, during and
after the election, take a look at the databases themselves. I show how this
was done in Marin County Calif in a current story at

Government is the servant of the people, and not the master of them. The
people, in delegating authority, do not give their public servants the right
to decide what is good for the people to know and what is not good for them to
know. We insist on remaining informed so that we may retain control over the
instruments of government we have created.
Black Box Voting is a nonpartisan, nonprofit 501c(3) elections watchdog group
funded entirely by citizen donations.
