Michael Alvarez and Jonathan Nagler have written on this subject, both for the group advocating for the Top 2 in California and in academic journals. Also Elizabeth Gerber. Search on "Alvarez and Nagler open primary" on scholar.google.com and the links come up.

Can someone point me to any literature on how the ideological make-up of the voters changes when moving from partisan primaries to a blanket primary. Should one expect to see more independents come out in the latter than in the former? Any pointers would be welcome.
