Annual Updates

During the 2017-18 school year, LSIJ accomplished the following:

  • Founded a Naturalization Clinic with CARECEN and El Centro Legal
  • Held a DACA solidarity vigil with La Raza Law Students Association, Asian/Pacific Islander Law Students Association (APILSA), Black Law Students Association (BLSA), Muslim Law Students Association (MLSA), Native American Law Students Association (NALSA), and other student organizations
  • Trained and coordinated volunteers for a DACA renewal clinic with UCLA Undocumented Students Program and UC Immigrant Legal Services Center
  • Hosted an advocacy-focused panel, "From LAX to the Supreme Court and Back: Challenging the Muslim Travel Ban"
  • Trained and coordinated volunteers to interview immigrants detained at Adelanto Detention Center, in partnership with ACLU SoCal and Esperanza Immigrants Rights Project
  • Hosted a panel on the detention of asylum-seeking women and children in Dilley, Texas
  • Sent four law students to volunteer with CARA Pro Bono Project in Dilley, Texas in summer 2017, and five law students in summer 2018
  • Raised funds for travel costs for immigrant families detained in Dilley, Texas
  • Coordinated LSIJ members to attend rallies in downtown LA
  • Co-sponsored an immigration panel at the student-run conference, "Liberation Lawyering," hosted by the UCLA Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild
  • Co-sponsored a workshop on trauma-informed lawyering
  • Hosted a happy hour mixer with UCLA alumni practicing in the immigration field
