Yes, GMail's conversation-threading and filtering is essential for
anyone that receives a lot of email.
You can set up a filter exceedingly easily: by going to the top of any
election-law email in GMail, look to the far right for a small
down-pointing arrow, click on it and select "filter messages like
this". It will set a filter parameter of:
list:"law-election.department-lists.uci.edu"
You can then have these emails skip the inbox and be filtered into a
label (like "election law").
With conversation threading and GMai's smart display, it will show all
the emails that have similar subjects as part of a single
"conversation"... and it will not display email text that you've
already seen further up the thread in down-stream emails in that
conversation.
