Special sessions often vary depending on state law. Virginia and Georgia had special sessions specifically for redistricting. Others simple incorporate redistricting into the regular session after maintaining sessions through pro forma days and then reconvene in regular session for redistricting
This is an issue we can consider as part of a NCSL project in the near future.
