The ACLU seeks a dynamic creative litigator with vision to help define
and then lead its voting rights work. This is a watershed moment in
voting rights. The validity of section 5 of the Voting Rights Act,
perhaps the single most successful civil rights law in history, is now
before the United States Supreme Court. The once broad agreement that
the ability of people to vote should be maximized has broken down, with
many arguing that only the well informed should vote and with
legislatures passing laws making voting difficult. At the same time,
public impatience with archaic voting processes is creating a matchless
opportunity for electoral reform.

At this critical moment, the ACLU is seeking a Managing Attorney for its
voting rights work. The Managing Attorney will, along with the Director
of the ACLU's Equality Center and with help from the long-time Director
of the ACLU's Southern Regional Office, decide what issues the ACLU
should prioritize, what long term goals it should persue, and which
strategies and tactics it should use. Those potential tactics include
litigation, state and federal legislation, administrative reform and
public education and mobilization.

This is a once-in-a-generation chance to help chart the course of
America's premiere defender of civil rights and civil liberties on the
bedrock right to self government. The Managing Attorney will need to be
an experienced, savy litigator. But she or he will also have to have a
vision for protecting the vote that encompasses winning in the halls of
state legislatures and Congress, and in the court of public opinion.
The Managing Attorney will supervise ACLU staff lawyers working on
Voting Rights, and, along with the Center Director, will provide
direction to state and federal lobbyists and advocates and
communications staff. The Managing Attorney will report to the Equality
Center Director.

The job description is attached. While the job will remain open until
filled, the ACLU plans on reviewing applications and starting the
interview process before the end of the year.
