[EL] history of secret or Australian ballot

A week or two ago somebody on the list mentioned that secret ballots
were supported by some because it was believed to weaken the vote of
minorities. Can somebody point me to academic literature on this
again? And, if you are familiar with the literature, I'd love to know
if scholars think of this as a major factor in the development of the
secret ballot or just one of many factors. I admit that I had not
heard that line of reasoning before (although I've have never really
looked into it). I'm interested in using this in my State and Urban
Politics course; either as a reading or for my lecture notes.
