The Orlando Sentinel has this story<http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-06-23/news/os-elections-seminole-candidate-write-in-20120623_1_write-in-candidates-election-law-loophole-voters-from-other-parties> on a state law that allows all voters to vote in a party’s primary where only that party fields candidates, unless there’s a write-in candidate. It reports that “Republicans and Democrats alike have used the write-in tactic to keep voters from other parties out of their primaries.”

Add Alaska to the list of state and local jurisdictions challenging Section 5′s constitutionality. Alaska Public Radio<http://www.alaskapublic.org/2012/06/22/state-challenges-federal-voting-rights-requirement/> and the Alaska Dispatch<http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/more-alaska-redistricting-litigation-attorney-general-challenges-voting-rights-act-precleara> report on the state’s argument, in defense of a lawsuit<http://electionlawblog.org/?p=35701> challenging its failure to obtain preclearance of the state legislative redistricting plan. A federal district judge had previously denied a motion<http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/judge-allows-election-proceed-despite-redistricting-concerns> to enjoin preparation for the August 28 primary for failure to obtain preclearance.
