[EL] Bopp on Mann/Ornstein

I like people who know what they want and will not abide conflict--you know where they are coming from and can decide to deal with them or not. Unfortunately these people do not often do well in governance.

The Declaration of Independence took months to write-- they did not gather for that purpose, but after hearing each others' views they slowly came to that outcome.

Governing is hard-- no one ever gets everything they want. You do the best you can with the people, talent and time you have. Signing anything that holds you to a position that leaves no ability to consider new information means nothing may get done that makes governing even harder.

Principles are important, but they are not on paper, they are inside of people. Holding them makes getting something done hard, but what gets done can be made much better.

The problem occurs when nothing happens especially when we are in a serious race for which nation will control the next century. We were the only industrial economy left after WWII so it was not so hard. This century will be more difficult--oil and gas or renewable energy or both; universal broadband or not; surveillance of everyone all of the time; consumer rights and due process: cyber or physical schools.

Government decisions must be made in small ways and on a large scale or we may follow instead of lead for no other reason than too many people in governance cannot, do not understand the role, or will not govern.
