*Ballot tampering reported in Clackamas County*
PORTLAND, Ore. - Authorities are investigating whether a Clackamas County
election worker tampered with mail ballots this week.
County Clerk Sherry Hall said a criminal violation of election law was
uncovered by her office Wednesday and reported to the secretary of state's
Elections Division. Hall declined to identify the worker or describe the
specific nature of the violation.
However, Department of Justice spokesman Jeff Manning said investigators
are looking into whether a temporary county worker tampered with ballots
that had already been mailed in by voters.
"The obvious question is how widespread, how many have been tampered with
and how do you tell if a ballot has been tampered with," Manning said. "I
can't answer that right now."
"Given the timing, it almost couldn't be worse," Manning added. "This is a
high priority for us and we're devoting a lot of resources to it."
Marking another person's ballot is a felony.
Sources told KATU the woman who is being investigated in the tampering case
voted a Republican ticket.
