[EL] Democracy and National Initiatives and Referendums

I wonder whether supporters of an NPV system for electing the president (and of other reforms that would make our system more "democratic") would be in favor of national initiatives and referendums. Are they in favor of the kind of democracy that initiatives and referendums give us in California? Does the analogy fail because presidential electors no longer function as representatives in any meaningful fashion?
