The term “Internet voting” is used, and misused, in different ways. As a supporter of Internet voting, I use the term to refer strictly to voting on a secure website, where the voter logs on, has the registration checked, is presented w/ a ballot, marks it, and sends it.

Anti-Internet voting activists call a voted ballot returned by email “Internet voting.” This enables them to mislead people by attributing the insecurity of common email to voting through a more secure website, which is apples and oranges. (I criticize the integrity of their research methods at http://internetvotingforall.blogspot.com/2012/08/common-cause-caught-using-junk-science.html )

In 2010, West Virginia had website based true Internet voting for its overseas military. State officials and voters had a great experience. For more on this see, Internet Voting Profile in Courage: Natalie Tennant http://tinyurl.com/NT-Courage

Currently, WV does NOT have the same system, but is using one just like NC. The problem is that two companies offered their Internet voting service to WV in 2010 as a free trial. But the state legislature opted for the less expensive system in 2012.

Natalie Tennant, WV SOS, continues to be an active promoter of Internet voting, and suggests that the entire country would do well to adopt it. See,
