I'm the new Chair of the AALS Legislation and Law of the Political Process
Section. If you're on the faculty of an AALS member school but aren't
currently a member of the section, I'd encourage you to join, following these
instructions<http://www.aals.org/documents/sections/SectionSignUpInstructions.doc>
.

At the annual meeting on Saturday, the section elected the following people
to serve on the section's executive commitee during the coming year:

Jim Brudney, Fordham (Chair-Elect)
Bill Blatt, Miami
Mike Dimino, Widener
Josh Douglas, Kentucky
Atiba Ellis, West Virginia
Terri Enns, Ohio State
Abbe Gluck, Yale
John Manning, Harvard
David Romantz, Memphis
Brad Smith, Capital

We also discussed the possibility of creating a separate Election Law (or
Law of the Political Process) section at Saturday's meeting. As some of
you may recall, the section's name was changed from "Legislation" to
"Legislation and Law of the Political Process" in 2007. The section's
subject-matter coverage includes both statutory interpretation and election
law, although the annual meeting program has focused on statutory
interpretation in recent years. The first step in creating a new Election
Law section would be a petition from 50 faculty from at least 25 schools.
Possible advantages include greater visibility for the field and the
opportunity to have a panel on an election law topic (as well as one on
statutory interpretation) each year. Possible disadvantages include a
reduction in the size of the section (currently around 400) and the
elimination of a forum in which legislation and election law scholars can
exchange ideas with each other.

*I'd very much appreciate hearing your thoughts, in whatever form you care
to provide them, on the possibilty of creating a separate Election
Law section*. Feel free to email me off list or call at the number below.
It would be helpful to receive responses by *January 18*.
Finally, the section has created an exam and syllabus
bank<http://exchange.westlaw.com/Groups/Group.aspx?GroupID=437&navTabIndex=4&tab=Materials&f=1&m=0>
for
both Legislation and Election Law courses. It can be found by going to
exchange.westlaw.com (search “Groups” for "Legislation”) using your Westlaw
"one-pass" password. Mike Dimino of the section's executive committee has
created and graciously agreed to maintain the repository. I'd encourage
all of you who teach either course to contribute your syllabi and
exams. If you have something you'd be willing to add, please email Mike at
mrdimino at widener.edu.

Thanks, and look forward to hearing from you.
