"Sensenbrenner: Unbending commitment to voting rights"

The Representative writes a USA Today oped
<http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2013/07/31/voting-rights-supreme-court-sensenbrenner-column/2599525/>:
"While it is too early to say how to best restore the formula struck
down by the Court, any solution must be politically palatable and comply
with the Court's interpretation of the Constitution. It will require
extensive legal expertise and political input as this is not an easy
puzzle to solve."

"Former Secretary of State Charlie White has sued former Marion County
Prosecutor Carl Brizzi, alleging legal malpractice and other
professional malfeasance in the handling of a criminal case that
resulted in White being convicted of voter fraud, perjury and theft."

As i hear it Charlie White may have a decent case.

"Holder's Texas-Sized Gambit after Voting Act Loss"

I have written this oped
<http://www.law.com/jsp/nlj/PubArticleNLJ.jsp?id=1202613130666&thepage=1> for
the /National Law Journal. /It begins:

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on July 25 that it would
seek renewed federal oversight of some jurisdictions previously
subject to DOJ "preclearance" because of their history of racial
    discrimination in voting.

The DOJ's move, which will begin with Texas, is made under the
Voting Rights Act's little-used "bail in" provision---and it is
risky, both politically and legally. But given the few alternatives
to protect minority voters, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder
probably figures the risks are worth taking.

A Word About the San Diego Mayoral Recall and this Blog
    <http://electionlawblog.org/?p=53715>

Posted on July 30, 2013 11:04 am <http://electionlawblog.org/?p=53715>
by Rick Hasen <http://electionlawblog.org/?author=3>

Ordinarily I'd be chomping at the bit to comment on the San Diego
mayoral recall campaign. There are some meaty legal (and political) issues.

However, given that I testified just last month before the City of San
Diego on their campaign finance laws, and consulted with the City
recently on those laws, I don't think it is appropriate for me to weigh
in on the blog or to the media with legal opinions on these issues.

I'll still link to stories on the recall, but I plan on refraining from
my own commentary on the recall.
