Hi, all.
I hope the information in the letter below from APSA (whether you act on it
one way or another or not at all) is pertinent to the list. The original
letter to NSF from Sen. Coburn deriding political science mentions studies
of public attitudes toward filibusters, for instance. Presumably, there is
or has been research funding from NSF on topics even more directly relevant
to this group.

Dear Colleague,
Time is of the essence, and again I encourage you to contact your
senators<http://apsa.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0yMjA0ODM5JnA9MSZ1PTc3ODg1OTg4NSZsaT0xMTA2ODIxMg/index.html>
to
express your views on the effort to eliminate federal funding of political
science. To facilitate your communication, we provide a direct
portal<http://apsa.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0yMjA0ODM5JnA9MSZ1PTc3ODg1OTg4NSZsaT0xMTA2ODIxMg/index.html>
to
your senators with sample language that you can modify to create your own
message. Also, you can find state and DC phone numbers for your senators at
the Senate website<http://apsa.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0yMjA0ODM5JnA9MSZ1PTc3ODg1OTg4NSZsaT0xMTA2ODIxMw/index.html>.
Please contact your senators as soon as possible!
As you know, the political science program at the National Science
Foundation (NSF) is under imminent threat. At* 2pm EST TODAY*, the Senate
will reconvene to resume consideration of amendments to H.R. 933. Senator
Coburn’s amendment (SA 65) to eliminate NSF funding for political science
research is expected to be among those considered.
Please forward this
e-mail<http://apsa.informz.net/APSA/SendToFriend.asp?brandid=3284&email=douglasrhess@gmail.com&mfqid=6537245&mi=2204839&l=1&returnUrl=http://www.apsanet.org>
to
your colleagues, to your students, and to other concerned individuals, as
you deem appropriate. Additionally, we ask that you pass this information
on to your campus government relations office, which is well situated to
persuade Congress to oppose any efforts to eliminate political science
funding at NSF.
APSA is working closely with the Consortium on Social Science Association (
COSSA<http://apsa.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0yMjA0ODM5JnA9MSZ1PTc3ODg1OTg4NSZsaT0xMTA2ODIxNA/index.html>)
to pressure the Senate to oppose the Coburn amendment. On Friday, President
Mansbridge and I sent a letter to all
Senators<http://apsa.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0yMjA0ODM5JnA9MSZ1PTc3ODg1OTg4NSZsaT0xMTA2ODIxNQ/index.html>
urging
support for the political science program at NSF, and protection of the
integrity and independence of NSF. We distributed this letter by press
release, as well. Additionally, specific senators identified as critical to
preserving political science funding have been targeted for direct
communication from APSA’s national office and through department chairs.
All department chairs have been contacted for their assistance in reaching
faculty, campus government relations office and administrators, and others
who will contribute to our effort.
As always, we will keep you updated on the Senate’s activities through the APSA
advocacy webpage<http://apsa.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0yMjA0ODM5JnA9MSZ1PTc3ODg1OTg4NSZsaT0xMTA2ODIxNg/index.html>,
