That's well put Brad.  I wouldn't use exactly those words, but I do think that's a useful definition of one of the dividing axes.  

Speaking just for myself, though, I don't think I'm a progressive and a Democrat because I fear (I might use the word "distrust") private power any more or less than government power, but instead because over time there's grown to be less and less difference between the two.

Although there are many other issues, including different readings of empirical evidence and different views of how democracy and government ought to work, in many ways the basic dividing line is this: reform advocates fear private power more than government power; speech advocates fear government power more than private power.
