I wonder what makes Joe La Rue believe that the University of Alabama Black Faculty and Staff Association is a “race-based segregated” group. There is nothing in its mission statement (http://bama.ua.edu/~bfsaua/mission.htm) to suggest that this is true. Were I, a white person, a faculty member at the University of Alabama instead of at the University of Akron, I might well choose to join the Black Faculty and Staff Association as an expression of solidarity with the members of that organization and of support for its mission. Nothing in my experience with similar organizations in my part of the country suggests to me that I would be unwelcome. In fact, my experience is quite to the contrary.
I hasten to admit that I have no knowledge of the membership policies of the University of Alabama’s Black Faculty and Staff Association. If Joe La Rue has such knowledge, I would welcome any information he might supply.

Does anyone else find it ironic that charges of race-based segregation will be investigated by a committee including a representative appointed by the Black Faculty and Staff Association? I guess the message is that SOME race-based segregated groups on campus are okay, just not white ones.

NYT: <http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/26/nyregion/lhota-backers-challenge-cap-on-spending.html>
A new Republican group supporting the mayoral candidacy of Joseph J. Lhota sued New York election officials in federal court Wednesday to allow individuals to contribute more than the current $150,000 annual maximum to independent political groups.
Unless the court believes that this comes too close to the election (a laches-type argument), a court could well grant an injunction against enforcing this limit in the mayoral election.

“Documents Show Partisan Fights at FEC Encouraged by Advocates Outside Agency” <http://electionlawblog.org/?p=55473>

Bloomberg BNA <http://news.bna.com/mpdm/MPDMWB/split_display.adp?fedfid=36723861&vname=mpebulallissues&jd=a0e1z2r2w4&split=0> :
Partisan battles at the Federal Election Commission over the last five years have not been unique to the agency but instead have reflected wider ideological warfare between Republicans and Democrats in Washington, according to longtime FEC observers.
That conclusion appears to be supported by newly released internal documents reflecting contacts between commissioners and people outside the agency.
The documents, released in response to Freedom of Information Act requests, show that FEC commissioners engaged in the recent partisan fights have been encouraged by Republican and Democratic lawyers and other outsiders, including at least one member of Congress and a top congressional staffer….
The newly released documents revealed no apparent instances of improper attempts to influence commissioners, as the original requesters suspected might be the case. But, the messages did provide a glimpse of the internal workings of an agency viewed by critics as gridlocked along party lines and dysfunctional.
