[EL] Congressional CR

Some of the press accounts imply that the CR only affects the Democratic and Republican Parties, but there is nothing in the language of the CR that restricts the effect to just those two parties. The Libertarian Party bought its first national hq building less than two years ago, and the party is heavily in debt because of this purchase. This CR might benefit the Libertarian Party, which has had two bequests made to it in excess of the existing annual limit. The party has not been permitted to accept the bequests except on a piecemeal basis, doling out a certain amount from the estate each year.

Half the states have no limits. If it passes, next year they should remove the segregated account requirement and allow the parties to spend the funds without artificial spending limits. After all, why do we want to incentivize cushier office space or ritzier conventions either? With all due respect to the practicing election lawyers that will benefit from segregated funds designed solely to give them more money, it strikes me that incentivizing litigation--and, more specifically, incentivizing political parties to seek still more judicial intervention in the political process--is a significant decision that, perhaps, merits additional discussion beyond the existing discussion about campaign finance.
