[EL] North Caroline judicial candidates -- party labels

This prompted me to check the list of NC Supreme Court Justices. I don’t know that Michael Morgan is an especially white-sounding name — or much different in terms of racial signals than that of his opponent, then-Justice Thomas Edmunds. (I do recall a Harris County TX election in which all of the Democratic judicial candidates won except for one white candidate whose free-spirited parents had christened her with an African-sounding first name.)
Per press account photos and his TV ads, Justice Morgan doesn’t appears to be black, but then I suppose few voters saw any of that. It would be interesting to see if county or precinct level election returns showed some sort of pattern.
I was surprised that Morgan was willing to admit openly that he went to Duke undergrad.
