“Trump is implicated in his attorney’s Stormy Daniels payment for the first time”<http://electionlawblog.org/?p=97998>
Posted on March 5, 2018 8:39 pm<http://electionlawblog.org/?p=97998> by Rick Hasen<http://electionlawblog.org/?author=3>

Aaron Blake<https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2018/03/05/trump-is-implicated-in-his-attorneys-stormy-daniels-payment-for-the-first-time/?utm_term=.d53ba98630d4> for WaPo:

The headline on the Wall Street Journal’s latest Stormy Daniels scoop<https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-lawyers-payment-to-porn-star-was-reported-as-suspicious-by-bank-1520273701> is that Trump attorney Michael Cohen’s $130,000 payment to the porn star set off red flags and was reported to the Treasury Department. But what came next seems much more important.

The Journal is also reporting that Cohen couldn’t get a hold of Trump late in the process and that he later complained that Trump hadn’t reimbursed him for the payment to Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford:

Mr. Cohen said he missed two deadlines earlier that month to make the $130,000 payment to Ms. Clifford because he couldn’t reach Mr. Trump in the hectic final days of the presidential campaign, the person said.

Ms. Clifford was owed the money in return for signing an agreement that bars her from discussing an alleged sexual encounter with Mr. Trump in 2006<https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-lawyer-arranged-130-000-payment-for-adult-film-stars-silence-1515787678>, people familiar the matter said.

After Mr. Trump’s victory, Mr. Cohen complained to friends that he had yet to be reimbursed for the payment to Ms. Clifford, the people said.

This may read like background used to fill out a story, but it is actually quite significant. These paragraphs represent the first time a major news outlet has reported that Cohen had spoken even behind the scenes about Trump being involved in the payment. Previously, the origins of the payment were more mysterious.

“Cruz campaign calls don’t want Texans to know about the primary”<http://electionlawblog.org/?p=97993>

McClatchy:<http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/article203319334.html>

Days before the Texas primary, one of Sen. Ted Cruz’s primary opponents was the target of the senator’s own campaign calls.

Rather than asking Stefano de Stefano<https://www.stefanofortexas.com/>, a Republican running against Cruz, for his support in the March 6 primary, the caller, paid by Cruz’s campaign, repeatedly refused to acknowledge that race exists.

In a recording provided by de Stefano, the caller insisted that Cruz is in a general election contest against Democrat Beto O’Rourke and ignored inquiries about the March 6 primary.

Asked by de Stefano whether there are any Republicans running against Cruz, the caller replied, “right now sir this is a general election, it’s just him going up against Beto O’Rourke, a two-way ticket for that Senate spot.”

Don’t forget to call your parents.
If you don’t, David Thornburgh found out Monday, you just might get a surprise phone call from a reporter: Hey, did you see your dad filed this brief with the U.S. Supreme Court?

“No. That’s very interesting,” said Thornburgh, laughing. “My mom called over the weekend. … It strikes me I should probably check in with them.”

“Maine’s Statewide Primaries to Use Ranked Choice Voting in June and Hold Referendum on System’s Future”<http://electionlawblog.org/?p=97984>
Posted on March 5, 2018 8:03 pm<http://electionlawblog.org/?p=97984> by Rick Hasen<http://electionlawblog.org/?author=3>

Fairvote release:<http://www.fairvote.org/maine_s_statewide_primaries_to_use_ranked_choice_voting_in_june_and_hold_referendum_on_system_s_future?utm_campaign=pr_maine03_5_18&utm_medium=email&utm_source=fairvote>

The people have spoken: they want to use ranked choice voting (RCV) in June and have a chance to keep the system in place for future primary and congressional elections.

Matthew Dunlap, Maine’s secretary of state today certified 66,687 signatures to force a ‘People’s Veto’ referendum that could override the state legislature’s decision to delay implementation of RCV.

The certification sets up two historic votes on June 12. Maine voters will use RCV that day in all primaries for state and federal offices — and they will vote to restore key sections of the 2016 law that instituted RCV to elect Maine’s state, and federal officials.
