[EL] Sad Outcome

The APSA has announced the cancellation of its convention in New Orleans, which was supposed to begin on Thursday. Based on what I've heard since yesterday from a number of people including those involved in our group's panel and dinner (and including myself, after my Wednesday flight to New Orleans was cancelled yesterday), a very high percentage of people were going to be unable to get there. The APSA announcement emphasized the conditions in New Orleans itself, as well as the fact that the breakdown of travel to New Orleans that was already evident for tomorrow is spreading to Thursday.

This will undoubtedly be a big hit to the APSA, which, as academic groups go, is a good one. I hope it will not have long term ramifications. No one seems to think the degree of damage to New Orleans will at all resemble 2005. Let us hope they are right.

             Best,
