Richard is right, of course. I'll note that one of the interesting changes
in our elections was a massive move from two-year gubernatorial terms to
four-year terms in the years after World War Two.
I'll also note that as recently as 2002, gubernatorial election results
were often quite different than presidential outcomes in that state and had
their own patterns based on factors like state economic performance. 2002
was a super incumbent-friendly year on the federal level, but half of
governor's mansions changed changes -- including a large number of
Democrats winning in deeply red state and vice versa. We wrote about that
